Our Story
A Legacy of Innovation in Education
Calibre was founded on the belief that education should adapt to students—not the other way around. That belief comes from our founder, Shannon Smith, whose early work in public charter education helped shape one of Arizona’s first charter schools, e‑Institute.
Building on that foundation, a family of learner-centered schools was established across the Southwest, including Calibre and partner schools serving students in Arizona, Nevada, Oklahoma, and Utah. Calibre was created as part of this broader vision, grounded in proven models but rooted in the local community.
Since opening in 2002, Calibre has remained a proud part of the Surprise education community, with a small satellite campus in Yuma. While our network has grown, Calibre’s purpose has stayed the same: to offer a public charter school experience shaped by strong values, accountability, and a commitment to helping students reach their personal best.
